On Thursday, April 10, the Hamline faculty voted unanimously to reject Interim Provost Rundquist and Dean Kostihova’s proposal to eliminate the M.F.A. in Creative Writing. Despite this outcome, the Interim Provost intends to uphold cuts to “Water~Stone Review” and our beloved staff member Meghan Maloney-Vinz (Programs Coordinator and Executive Editor of “Water~Stone” and “Runestone Reviews”). LET ME BE CLEAR: There is no Creative Writing Program at Hamline University without Meghan. She is critical to our M.F.A., B.F.A., and to the entire Hamline community. We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, encouragement and solidarity from people across campus, the Twin Cities, Minnesota and nationally. This support comes as no surprise, as it is, I believe, in response to the goodwill Meghan has generated over the years, her compassion towards and interest in literary citizens near and far and her unwavering commitment to supporting and in many ways defining the oldest M.F.A. program in the state of Minnesota. I still believe our leaders have the integrity to do the right thing, to reverse these budget cuts and to save not just CWP, but Hamline itself by maintaining the single most devoted and selfless employee this school has ever known.
Letter to the Editor: Hamline can’t afford to lose beloved CWP staff member
