Tasty Treat Trends

Instagram-worthy ice cream rolls into the Twin Cities.

On a sunny Thursday afternoon, a friend and I ventured out to try Wonders Ice Cream in Saint Paul. The creamery is the first of its kind in Minnesota, and boy, we should be glad to have it here. Wonders offers 20 different flavors of rolled ice cream, and includes whipped cream and any topping you might like. The toppings range from cereal (I got fruity pebbles on mine), to fresh fruit like strawberries or pineapple. The main attraction of the shop is definitely the artistry of the rolling and ‘churning’ of the ice cream.

The trend of stir-fried ice cream, or as we know it rolled ice cream, was created in the early 2000s in Thailand. After growing up wanting to open an ice cream shop, Co-Founder JK Yung hashed the idea out with his business partner, and decided to open Wonders. Yung expressed his want to “bring something awesome” to his home of Minnesota, and the city he spent a lot of time in as a child.

The ice cream is made out of an egg custard base, with flavour syrups and fresh fruit added to customize the ice cream each time.

“Our goal is to become the McDonald’s of rolled ice cream,” says Yung when asked about the originality of Wonders. Wonders sports the aesthetic to go along with the tasteful trend they sell, as their small corner shop is decorated in a black and white scheme, and simple tables and bar stools at which you can sit and enjoy your treats. “We want to be the Hibachi of Ice Cream,” said Yung.
