On Nov. 3 Hamline held its GAP & Service Year fair and Job & Internship fair in the Anderson center.

The GAP and Service Year Fair gives Hamline students opportunities to use the skills they graduate within service of the community. Students who wish to take a year off after they graduate and build strong ties to the community could consider some of these options provided by organizations such as Emergency Care Consultants, Emerge Community Development, College Possible, Peace Corps, Hamline University International fellowships, Lutheran Volunteer Corps, MN Campus Compact, College Health Corps and many more.
Residence and dining is also provided by certain programs such as the St. Joseph Workers Program. Through this program, students receive a unique experience of making and canning food, helping survivors of domestic abuse, and learning more about themselves spiritually, on the path of self-individualization. Apart from free residence and dining, students also receive a hundred dollars a month to help pay off their student loans.
The AmeriCorps opportunities for youth of ages 18 to 25 provides both outdoors and indoors service activities and opportunities for leadership. AmeriCorps members are awarded with a living stipend, paid training, health insurance and professional certifications. College Possible was a nonprofit present at the fair which helps low-income students get to and through college.
The Lutheran Volunteer Corps offer full-time stipended volunteer positions such as service, advocacy and community organizing positions in a variety of areas including addiction/recovery, anti-racism, education, environment, food justice, gender equality, health care, HIV/AIDS, housing, immigration, international solidarity, legal aid, LGBT equality, refugee services, senior services, supporting persons with disabilities, workers’ rights and youth engagement.
The Job and Internship fair of 2015 included a large variety of organizations and corporations in diverse fields such as Education, Health and Human Services, Corrections, Finance, Laboratory, Pre-settlement funding, Staffing, Natural Resources, Hunger Relief, Manufacturing, Software, Retail, Marketing, Science, Engineering, Automotive, and Banking.
The reputable organizations present at the fair are a source of internships or future employers for Hamline students. Some of the organizations that were present at the fair include Minnesota children’s museum, Minnesota Department of Human Services, Minnesota Department of Corrections, Northwestern mutual, Pace Analytical Services, Prospect Funding Holdings LLC, Robert Half, Second Harvest Heartland, Sign-zone, Sovos Compliance, Target, The Brewer Group, Tower Legal Solutions, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Army and Army Reserve, VERUM Staffing, Walser Automotive Group, and Wells Fargo.
The Minnesota Commercial Real Estate Diversity Collaborative supports academically promising minority students with financial need in Minnesota. This collaborative awards two scholarships worth $2000 each to two students annually. The Careers in Commercial Real Estate provides a list of sample careers and other resources for students interested in this field on their website.
The Minnesota Department of Human Services offers an array of career opportunities across the state for Hamline graduates. The types of positions offered include accountants, administrative assistants, alcohol and drug counselors, attorneys, judges, behavior analysts, business analysts, clinical psychologists, direct support Specialists, human resources, licensing and fraud investigators, clinicians, nursing, recreation therapists and many more.
