Winter Sports Summary
The 2015-16 Season in Review
March 4, 2016
Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team finished a 4-21 season with a 61-74 defeat at St. Mary’s on Feb. 17 and a 54-75 drubbing at home against Bethel on Saturday, Feb. 20. Against the Cardinals of St. Mary’s, the Pipers were paced by first-year forward Isaac Brooks’ game-high 19 points off the bench. The Cardinals got 18 points from first-year guard Kevin Gleason to beat the Pipers. The Pipers were led by senior forward Herbert Tarpeh’s 14 points in their loss to Bethel, and the Royals counted 21 points from junior guard Brycen Wojta.
Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball team fared little better than the men’s this year, finishing with a record of 3-22. They also played on Feb. 17 and 20, and lost to St. Mary’s and Bethel at home. Junior guard Chloe Graves led the Pipers with 18 points against the Cardinals, who counted 16 points from senior guard Bridget Pethke and 14 more from junior Sam Jones in their 48-64 victory over Hamline. The Pipers got 14 points from sophomore forward Alex Peterson and 13 more from Graves in their 53-69 defeat at the hands of the Royals. The Royals received 16 points from senior guard Sydney Schultz and 15 from junior forward Kalli Zimmermann.
Women’s Ice Hockey
Having had their faint playoff hopes fade away against St. Kate’s two weekends ago, the women’s hockey team was relegated to playing spoiler in this past weekend’s home-and-home series against Gustavus Adolphus. The women were crushed 3-9 in the Friday, Feb. 19 home game, but with their 1-1 tie on Saturday, Feb. 20, the women knocked the Golden Gusties out of the playoffs. Junior defensemen Jaci Reinke scored a goal in each game, and junior Jena Kosley and senior Megan Lawry tallied a goal apiece in the Friday game. The Pipers finished their season 9-13-3 (6-10-2 in conference play).
Gymnastics
The Pipers earned their second-highest score of the season, 183.250, but were defeated by Winona State’s top conference score to date, 186.175. The Pipers were led, as they have been for much of the season, by top-flight performances from first-year Sela Fadness on the vault and floor, as she scored 9.55 on the vault and 9.625 on the floor, taking second place in both events. Winona State was led by sophomore Eboni Jackson, who placed first in vault, floor, and balance beam and took second on the uneven bars. The Pipers have one last competition this Saturday, Feb. 27 in the Best of Minnesota meet, which includes the University of Minnesota, Gustavus Adolphus, and Winona State before traveling to La Crosse, Wisconsin for their regional competition.
Track and Field
Both the men and women’s track teams have been having successful seasons to this point, each team counting four top-three team finishes, including two meet victories for the men (St. Olaf Triangular, Hamster Invite). Individual success has littered the indoor tracks the Pipers have been competing on, and both the men and women’s teams have a pre-MIAC meet at Macalester starting at 5:00 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 26.
