The entirety of the Hamline community collectively holds its breath while faced with the inevitable onslaught of people dressed as killer clowns, Harley Quinn, Deadpool, and Donald Trump’s hair in the weeks to come. All shiver in anticipation with the reality of the realization that the Halloween season is officially here, and with it comes a variety of fun and spooky adventures for Hamline students to indulge in. The rest of October is filed to the brim with interesting and unique events ranging from parades to pumpkin carving, to costume parties and this is the list of the ten best.

1.) ValleySCARE Outing

The annual haunted outing will take place the evening of Saturday Oct. 22. Tickets went on sale earlier this month for HUPB’s outing, but ValleySCARE is still an amazing time of tricks and treats to experience with a group of friends.

2.) Trick or Canning

Throw on a costume, grab some friends and join Theta Chi Fraternity and Delta Tau Sorority to help the community on Oct. 31. Trick or Canning is a great way to have fun and give back. Hamline students involved in the event will Trick or Treat around the community for canned goods to give to Keystone Community Services. There will also be prizes awarded for the teams that collect the most items!

3.) Monster Dash ½ marathon/10 mile/5K

Like dressing up as superheroes? Enjoy running with other people dressed as superheroes? The public is invited to register for the Minnesota Monster Dash, which will take place Oct. 29. The run is a fun opportunity to fulfill childhood dreams of beating the Flash in a foot race!

4.) Twin Cities horror festival

Oct. 27 – Nov. 6 is the perfect time to stretch some batwings and fly into the Southern Theater for a festival featuring horror culture. Theatre dance music and film will all be utilized to make the audience scream in fear and admiration of these performances.

5.) Kick or Treat

This play on words is anything but cute. With over 13 flights and 80 teams, this year’s Halloween-themed soccer tournament is shaping up to be horridly exciting. This tournament will take place over three days: Oct. 19 – Oct. 23.

6.) Stranger Things: A Halloween Party

On Oct. 28 the public is invited to a dance party of monumental proportions. Taking place at Mill City Nights, this party is set to be off the chain, or in the upside down, one of the two. Inspired by the hit TV show Stranger Things, this 18+ dance party will feature local DJs Fancy Restaurant and Shannon Blowtorch and a guest appearance by Milk Queen from RuPaul’s Drag Race season six.

7.) Victorian Ghost Stories at the James J. Hill House

Fly back in time to the Victorian age as costumed actors read ghost stories by authors including Edgar Allen Poe, the Brothers Grimm, and Edith Wharton. Then experience the majesty of the James J. Hill House in a guided tour. This awesomely spooky event takes place every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

8.) Haunted Hallway

Wander carefully through a multitude of scare-tastic rooms of horror in the basement of Manor Hall. Various groups of Hamline will put on their scariest costumes and jump out of the many dark nooks and crannies.

9.) Scream Town

Not fearing travel? Take a trip down to Chaska, Minn. and face the horrors of Scream Town. Dubbed one of Minnesota’s top Halloween attractions, this entire town of terror is just a hop, skip and a scream away.

10.) Haunted Hamline

While most of these attractions are seasonal affairs, Hamline’s haunted buildings remain a year long scare. Reports of contact on Ouija boards and flickering lights are not the only Halloween phantoms in the various buildings on Hamline. Manor, Old Main and Drew Hall are home to the most active spirits around, and Hamline remains a prominent stop on the Haunted Saint Paul’s tour. Bumps in the night may happen all year, but remember, Halloween is the night when the veil is thinnest between this world and the world of nightmares.

Happy Halloween Hamline!
