In the world of sports, every match tells a story. This season, Hamline men’s soccer has been crafting a narrative that is capturing attention. In the midst of this exceptional season, they have outperformed the records of previous years. They have surpassed last season’s win total in Coach Oliver’s first season. This achievement signifies the most impressive performance seen in the last four years.
Guiding this commendable performance is Coach Tyler Oliver, who brings in a wealth of experience from his four years with the Gustavus Adolphus College men’s soccer program; two as assistant head coach, alongside previous coaching experience. Oliver’s vision for the team encompasses not only strategic dominance on the field but also the cultivation of a strong sense of family, emphasizing the importance of unity and teamwork.
Training has become more focused on specific strategies the team looks to implement into their gameplay.
A possession-based game is what the team has lacked in past years. Possession style play in soccer emphasizes ball control and many short passes between players.
“Our practices are my favorite part of my day and I think all of our players would say the same thing. When they all have fun and a smile on their face,” Oliver said. “It’s contagious and makes it easy to take things to the next level.”
Bonding events outside of practices have significantly enhanced the team’s sense of camaraderie. “Especially as a first year, it felt like a really welcoming team,” striker Ryder Tomlinson said.
Oliver stresses the significance of discipline and wholehearted dedication to both the game and the team.
“There’s a we-over-me mentality on the team that’s emphasized by Oliver,” Jose Meza said.
The “we-over-me” mentality is encapsulated by prioritizing the team’s success over individual aspirations.
“There has to be some sacrifice of selfishness in order for the team to succeed.” Oliver said.
The team’s primary objective this year is to secure a top-six position in the conference, clinching their qualification for the playoffs. Meza acknowledges the challenge of bouncing back after a tough game, but he highlights Oliver’s positive influence. All interviewees agreed that Oliver instills a sense of confidence in each player, with Senior Nate Vogel noting “[Oliver]’s personality brings out the best in everyone.”
Oliver’s coaching approach is grounded in his personal philosophy, emphasizing wholehearted commitment and love. He believes in granting players a sense of freedom and confidence during their play, understanding that mistakes are inevitable, but it is their response that truly matters. Any error made can become a learning opportunity for the team, according to Oliver’s coaching philosophy.
The Men’s Soccer team’s journey this season has been marked by notable achievements and a strong sense of unity. The commitment to refining their strategies has propelled them to new heights on the field. The squad amassed just five wins in the 2022 season, now at six wins The Pipers are looking to find even more success in the home stretch.
Coach Oliver’s positive and enjoyable training approach has fostered an atmosphere where each player thrives, emphasizing the contagious power of smiles and camaraderie. Regardless of the wins and losses, the team’s dedication to continuous improvement and their shared passion for the game have shone through.
