The Hamline University lacrosse team has had an incredible record-breaking season thus far. With the best record in over five years as well as several broken records, this season will be one to remember. Especially their game against Augsburg University on April 3. Not only was it a conference game, but it was also a game where six different records were broken. This immensely impressive game paves the way for success for the remaining weeks of the season.
This historic game began with the Pipers taking control instantly. With 11 goals scored in the first quarter alone. This momentum carried into the rest of the game, where four goals were scored in the second quarter, six in the third, and five in the fourth. Sophomore Emma Collins scored eight of the goals and three assists. Juniors Emma Halweg and Kayli Starkey led close behind with four goals each. Starkey also led in the number of assists that occurred.
Not only did they break the record for most goals scored in a game, but they also broke the record for most goals scored in a half, as well as the record for the margin of victory. Team points and assists were also totaled to be a new record, as well as the number of shots, which was 54 in total.
Individually, junior Kayli Starkey broke the record for assists, 38 and counting. This historic game broke seven program records overall and will be tough to beat in the future.
Coach Adam Dobis is also having his best season here at Hamline. When asked about how the team’s spring break momentum is propelling them to success, he had some motivating words.
“We are using the nonconference success and momentum to give our team confidence going into our conference schedule. We have a great foundation set as a team and are excited for the conference challenges coming our way,” Coach Dobis said via email. “This time away was a great opportunity for us to grow as a team and come closer together as a group.”
The community and closeness of this team are clear in the way they continue to perform impressively. It was easily proven in the undefeated spring break games.
“My favorite part of working with the team is working with each individual player and seeing their progression as a person, student, and lacrosse player throughout the year!” Coach Dobis said via email.
This progression is sure to propel the team to a successful conference play, and perhaps even further. With several records broken already and an amazing first half of the season, it will be exciting to see what other accomplishments these players will achieve. Their next home game is their alumni game against U.W. Stevens Point.
