The newest thriller in the box office, Concord Floral, ran in Anne Simley the weekend before last with four performances over April 28, 29 and 30. The show starred 10 actors and a creative team of eight, pulling together talents from all over campus. Written by Jordan Tanahill and directed by Jeff Turner, the scenic and lighting design was led by fellow Performance, Production, and Community staff members Steven Read and Kim Lartz, respectively.

First-year Beau Bauer, sophomore Liam Mallery and junior Abi Grace Mart led the sound design and guest designer Eleanor Schanilec was in charge of costume design. Beau Bauer contributed an original composition.
The performance followed a group of teenagers around their neighborhood and into the nearby field in which sat an abandoned greenhouse, the old Concord Floral building. In the throes of teen angst, the story of a neglected and reclaimed space is told through the animals, objects and people that shelter in the expansive empty and personified building.

Kas Austin played the Concord Floral building character, who acted as the narrator to the story. The first-year welcomed the audience to the scene’s neighborhood and provided the context necessary to the telling of the story. As the tale progressed, lighting cues and blocking indicated to the viewers where each on-stage actor was in the neighborhood during that scene.
The intricate staging paired with verbal explanatory indicators led the audience through a psychological thriller complete with strobe lights, ominous chanting and musical cues, projection and low lighting. The theater melted into the environment of the Concord Floral neighborhood.
The Performance, Production and Community department is looking forward to the upcoming dance show April 26-28 to finish up their semester of entertaining performances.
