Women’s tennis is becoming the next “History Makers”
The 2024-2025 Women’s Tennis regular season came to an end after their last home match against Macalester College.
On Sunday, April 27, the Pipers took on the Highland Cows at a home matchup where they finished in a victorious 6–3 match. The match followed a home loss against St. Catherine’s on Friday, April 25. Overall, Women’s Tennis ended their season at 13–8.
“I feel like we’ve had such a successful season. We’re all just going to go out on such a high energy … we’re already so still really happy about what we’ve been able to accomplish so far,” junior Chloe Reyes said.
The team has not been able to finish a season with a winning record in over 15 years. During the season, the team was able to pull off its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win against Saint Mary’s in a 5-4 match.
“It was really awesome. It was great to see the whole team obviously having that excitement of getting the MIAC matches [win] and then winning in a row and just kind of see all of our hard work at practice and in the matches obviously like pay off,” junior Chrissa Muller said.
Not only has this season been a success for the team, but it has also been a hit for Head Tennis Coach Spencer Jones. This season marked the first MIAC win for Coach Jones in his coaching career at Hamline as well.
“He is just so excited to be a part of it. I know he should be claiming all this success, but he gives it to us, and he’s like, ‘you guys are just so amazing.’ He’s so funny, he calls us ‘The History Makers’ because every time we play a match and we win, it’s like something new, like, ‘oh first MIAC win’ or ‘first consecutive.’ It’s just so fun to be a part of the team and be able to have so much success,” Reyes said.
One thing being attributed to the team’s success are the new Holt Courts at Jeff Green & Family Tennis Center home courts. The Pipers’ home turf received a much needed upgrade over the 2024 summer.
“Honestly, getting those new courts donated by the Holt and Green families has been a tremendous success, with just being able to practice on campus and get a lot more personal work. I think that’s really helped benefit the whole team and really let us achieve our goals and get those higher skills that we’ve been working towards,” Muller said.
As the season wraps up, Coach Jones is looking ahead to the upcoming Fall season already and how to follow up on the success the Women’s Tennis team has had.
“We bring back a huge core of our lineup and have two excellent recruits committed for the Fall as well. The future is bright!” Jones said via email. “I look for good people who are good players. Chemistry is very important, so we try to balance athletics and personality when recruiting.”
Before the core returns for the 2025-2026 season they will have the summer to train and prepare for whatever the fall season may throw their way. With the 13–8 record the Piper’s finished 7th in the MIAC, just one spot short of the postseason.
“We’ve been having such a great season, so it’s just super exciting kind of to be able to change the path of Women’s Tennis at Hamline for the better,” Muller said.
