The Hamline University women’s basketball team’s winning streak began on Dec. 13 against Bethany Lutheran. From there, the team seemed unstoppable, achieving wins against the Claremont-Mudd Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer during their short trip to California. After several wins, the team has settled back in Minnesota. Ending as the victor in games against conference teams St. Catherine, St. Scholastica, St. Benedict, Carleton, St. Olaf two times and Augsburg. However, their winning streak was eventually ended by one of their conference rivals, Gustavus, who managed to win by three points earlier this season, this time by a devastating four points.
After the impressive win streak was completed, the tea
m competed against St. Catherine’s once again, whom they had beaten previously. The day was also an important one for the seven seniors on the team. Sophie Stork, Camille Cummings, Aliyah Robran, Josie Wiebsusch, Isabella Jensen, Evelyn Wiltrout and Marina LaFreniere celebrated their senior game at the historic Hutton Arena.
Although it ended with a 53–50 loss for the Pipers, their efforts did not go unnoticed. Throughout the game, they forced 29 turnovers and had 19 steals. The lead scorer was sophomore Josie Schmid, who scored 13 of their points. With 11 points, junior Lauren Cooper had a total of 11 points. Senior Camille Cummings followed close behind with 10 points and senior Sophie Stork rounded out the high scoring with five points. Even though it wasn’t enough to edge out St. Catherine, the team still showed what they are made of.
The team’s impressive win streak, as well as their determination, will lead them into a hopeful rest of their season, with a few more games to prove what they are capable of. The 10-game win streak is an extremely impressive feat, and it will be quite interesting to see where the program will go in the near and far future!
