Hamline Tennis flew down on March 8 to Orlando, Florida, for an eight-day spring break trip. During this time, the women’s team had three scheduled matches, but Transylvania University had cancelled the matches. After, the Women’s Tennis team was down to two matches on the trip, having matches against Roger Williams University and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The men’s team still had three matches against Roger Williams, Vassar College, and the University of Scranton.
Women’s Tennis
The women’s first match was against Roger Williams University, where a heated match started their trip. The match began with Hamline Tennis winning the double point. There are three doubles matches played, and when one team wins two out of three of the doubles matches, they secure the doubles point.
For women, this was secured by the duos of junior Elanna Kohner and senior Chrissa Muller, and sophomore Emily Dreger and first-year Gabi Newton, both having a 6–1 win to the doubles point for the women’s. After three points lost, leaving the match 1–3 for overall points, it was up to the final three players in the match: Muller, Dreger, and Shayla Draper. Muller began the comeback for the Pipers, winning in a 10—7 victory. Then, Dreger won in a 12—10 victory after bouncing back from a second-set loss. The final win to secure the 4—3 win over Roger Williams was Draper, who had a 12—5 win.
Women’s tennis had a much more dominant win in the final matches on Thursday, March 12. Our pipers had an early lead, securing the double point for winning two out of three matches to start our pipers off strong. With only two losses in the singles play, and one match having a close tie breaker win, to finish their match against Eau Claire, 5—2. This was the first time in Women’s Tennis history to beat Eau Claire. These Pipers finished their spring break with a 6—3 record overall.
“It was such a fun trip, being with my teammates and getting to bond over this week, it will help bring high spirits into the rest of the season.” Draper, who had won all her matches in Florida, said.
Men’s Tennis
The men’s tennis match against Roger Williams University was tight from the beginning for the Pipers. The men’s team lost the doubles point early, with Hamline only having one double point victory in the three matches for the doubles point. Third-year Wyatt Crowell helped secure the first point for the Pipers in his singles match, going 6—1 and 10—7 for the victory. Sophomore Matthew George , had gotten the second point for Hamline, having two victories as well, a 6—2 and a 10—1 win. First-year Max Gulliford was the last win for the Pipers, going 6—3 for the win — a hard-fought battle for Men’s Tennis.
The Men’s Tennis team had matches on March 12 and March 16. Their first match was against Vassar, where Hamline started hot by securing the double point with two match victories. However, singles is where the men’s team has fallen behind. Crowell was the only victor for the men’s singles, with a 6—4 and 6—2 win. Hamline’s final score versus Vassar University was 4–-2.
Men’s Tennis, wanting to leave Florida on a high note, had entered their match with Scranton determined to win. The men’s team started strong, winning all three double matches, securing the double point. Then, Crowell had finished his trip winning all of his singles matches, and followed by him, Sebring, George, Gulliford, Smith, and Saunders had won their matches, securing a 7—0 win to finish out their week-long trip.
