Hamline president opens up office

Office hours present opportunity for open conversation with new Hamline President.

In her continuing attempt to open up her office to Hamline personnel, Hamline President Dr. Fayneese Miller has begun a monthly session of office hours. Working with the Hamline Undergraduate Student Congress (HUSC), Miller has designated, with certain exceptions, the third Friday of every month as the day where eight students can sign up and sit down with her for a fifteen minute session.

“We talked about different ways to have this happen and then HUSC made a suggestion of a specific structure, which we liked,” says Anne Pierre, Office Administrator for the President’s Office.

The idea for office hours with the president came from Dr. Miller, though HUSC has had a big role in the development of the idea.

“We see these [office hours] as more opportunities for conversation than for a place to make requests,” says Pierre. “But that’s not to say that requests couldn’t be made.”

There are not any sort of ways to implement any suggestions made in Dr. Miller’s office hours as of yet, because that is not yet the vision that those who developed this idea had for them.

“We envisioned these as opportunities for students to talk about whatever is on their minds, career aspirations, advice, that sort of thing,” says Pierre.

There are certain limitations that are expected to be observed with these meetings with the President. Hamline junior Eric Yeakel, president of HUSC, is very clear about what should be avoided in these meetings.

“Concerns about things like financial aid, grade disputes or roommate issues should be directed to their designated offices,” Yeakel said.

Yeakel is working to develop a more permanent option to sign up for Dr. Miller’s office hours, which will run from 10 a.m  to 12 p.m each third Friday of the month, with exceptions for certain commitments.

“We are working with IT to facilitate access to the sign-up sheet more easily from the Hamline website,” he said. “Hopefully when IT gets done there will be a web page, but for now you can find the link on the HUSC Facebook page, Twitter account and Instagram account.”

The office hours are located in the President’s office in Old Main. Due to the lack of handicapable access to Old Main, there have been accomodations made for anyone who isn’t physically able to make it into the offices.

“Just let us know and we’ll find an acceptable alternate meeting place,” says Yeakel. “If you want to set up a meeting during these office hours and lack the capability to enter Old Main, email huscsec@hamline.edu and we’ll get it set up.”

Due to potential interest, sign-ups that take place on the day-of will not be honored.

“It’s first come, first serve,” says Yeakel. “And we have to get the list of names who signed up to the President by 4 o’clock the day before so that’s the absolute latest one should sign up.”

Laughter, cheering and clapping boomed thunderously through Anderson Center’s cavernous common area. The area itself, although spacious, was still not large enough to accommodate everyone comfortably. Despite the lack of seating for those who attended, the winners of the competition, The Beliebers, brought life and energy to the stage and the entire Anderson center.

“There was a great turnout but it’d probably be better to have the Lip Sync Competition in a bigger space on the campus next year,” Redd said.
