Open letter to President Miller

Jacob Stordahl, Student

Dear President Miller,

During this, my junior year, I have been observing behaviors made by this university surrounding a topic that I am very passionate about; sexual assault awareness/action on campus. During this time, I have found one very concrete characteristic of Hamline University under your ‘leadership’; students are reduced to their tuition dollars and the issue of most importance to you is Hamline University’s Corporate image.

The fact of the matter is, students do not feel safe on this campus and under your ‘leadership’ and you have not yet made any actual effort to rectify this. I attended the first “Let’s talk” event in Bush ballroom early this spring and there are a few things from this event I wish to address. First off, at the beginning of the event you spoke about a binder of Hamline’s sexual assault policies that you have in your office and how literate you are about said policies. Yet you failed to mention any ways that you have used this knowledge to bring justice to any sexual assault survivors. Secondly, during the open mic portion of this event you blatantly interrupted several students as they were trying to voice their opinions. As the President of this University, your voice is heard 24/7. It is ludicrous that you would take the opportunity to speak up away from these students.

I am writing this to give you the opportunity to speak and use the channels at Hamline’s disposal to make a difference on this campus. Make a difference so your students can feel safe. Or at the very least, make a difference before we do. If we see no actual action from you or the administration, there will be protests, there will be sit-ins, we will attract the media’s attention.

Don’t make us do your job.

Best regards,

Jacob Stordahl
