Dear Hamline Students and Community,
Since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, access to safe abortion care in the United States has fallen, as well as in Minnesota. It only took 100 days after the legal overturn for 66 clinics in 15 states to be closed, with many more closures to come.
This year, the Robbinsdale Clinic, P.A. in Minnesota had to close permanently due to a lack of access to funds. This leaves only three independent abortion providers in Minnesota, with all of them having a great risk of closing in the future due to a lack of funds.
Lack of funding for abortions can cause harm and death to people carrying high-risk or unviable pregnancies.
I urge you to take action now by talking to your legislators about the Reproductive Health Equity Bill (SF1890/HF1278)!
This bill will allocate $30 million in funding directly to Minnesota abortion providers. The bill aims to support a sustainable abortion provider ecosystem for five years. That means five years of safe access to abortions for pregnant people and the ability for them to make decisions about their own reproductive health care.
Under the Trump administration, abortion providers will most likely face further restrictions. With this funding, clinics will be able to be more flexible in responding to further restrictions as well as provide safe access to life-saving abortions.
There is no abortion justice without access.
