As the days get shorter and the air turns crisp, Minnesotans start to notice the shift from green leaves to shades of red, orange and yellow. Fall is here and one of the most popular things to do this time of year is take in the beautiful scenery.
According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Twin Cities area is expected to hit peak fall color mid to late October, meaning now is the time to start planning your fall adventures. Whether you want to take a walk through a park, go for a bike ride or just drive around to enjoy the view, there are plenty of local spots near Hamline University that make Minnesota something special.
Minnehaha Falls (20 min drive)
One of Minneapolis’ most iconic and oldest parks, Minnehaha Falls is a must see in any season, especially in the fall. The 53 foot waterfall surrounded by vibrant red and orange leaves makes for a perfect photo opportunity. The park offers plenty of trails that let you explore both the upper and lower areas of the falls.
After your walk, stop by Sea Salt Eatery for a bite before it closes for the season, or simply sit by the water and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Summit Avenue (10 min drive)
If you prefer something a little more out in the open, Summit Avenue is one of the best places to take a fall stroll. Known for its historic mansions and tree-lined sidewalks, the avenue turns into a tunnel of colors during October.
The walk stretches from the St. Thomas More Catholic Church all the way to Cathedral Hill Park, with plenty of coffee shops and spots to take in the scenery along the way
Loring Park (15 min drive)
Many may know this location from the Pride events that happen here every June, but this park is perfect for a stroll and for looking at the fall colors. The park is filled with trees that light up in every shade of fall, and the pond in the center reflects it beautifully, making it a great place to take a break from campus.
You can cross the pedestrian bridge into the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden for even more fun views. The sculptures look even more intriguing surrounded by reds and yellows.
Chain of Lakes (20 min drive)
For those who want a day trip, the Chain of Lakes, which includes Bde Maka Ska, Lake Harriet, and Lake of the Isles, offers miles of trails that showcase fall at its best. You can walk, bike or even rent a kayak to see the changing colors reflected on the water.
The best part about living in the Twin Cities is that you do not need to drive hours up north to enjoy fall colors when they are right here in our backyard.
So grab your favorite sweater and a friend and head out to explore before the leaves are gone.
