Trump for the win

Donald Trump’s celebrity and personality give him a boost in the presidential race.

A year and a half ago, almost nobody would have predicted that the 2016 election would be unfolding as it is. Plenty of Republicans like Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul seemed eager to learn from Mitt Romney’s mistakes and cast an image of being in-touch, regular Americans. But instead of a seemingly average American, real estate mogul and television celebrity Donald Trump is leading the Republican primaries by margins of at least double what the next runner up has. People have been wondering that if multimillionaire Mitt Romney was seemingly too out-of-touch with Americans, how will multibillionaire Donald Trump be any better? Will a man who is often described as being blunt and offensive, along with having proposals like putting all Muslim Americans in a database, be electable?

So why would Donald Trump win the nomination? As absurd as it may sound at first, it’d be the exact same reasons he might not be elected. Donald Trump’s frank and outspoken personality along with his reputation as a celebrity tycoon appeal to those people who are looking for a determined and charismatic president. If he didn’t have any problem firing apprentices to make his company more efficient, why would he have any problem doing the same as president? Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger have already paved the way for celebrities to become famous Republican politicians. Trump would be following in the footsteps of the Republican’s favorite president.

Will Donald Trump’s reputation and personality be enough to make Americans and even his fellow Republicans reject him? Or will it be enough to let him get the nomination, and even presidency? Only time will tell for sure.
