Lady Power Squared

Women empowerment nonprofit to host a poetry slam at woman-owned Urban Growler.

What has beer, poetry and a lot of ladies? Find Your Power’s upcoming event combines woman-brewed beer at Urban Growler with diverse, poetic voices on the topics of women’s empowerment, gender equity, and digital inclusivity into an event with all three.

Find Your Power is a Minneapolis-based nonprofit who aim to empower women with online resources, training, and partnership connections.

“When we empower a woman, we empower a community,” Ivy Kaminsky, CEO and Founder of Find Your Power, said.

That concept drives their mission to connect underrepresented women with resources that can lead to education, advocacy, community, and employment to combat the fact that women are 70% of the world’s poor population, according to the organization.

The upcoming event will act as fundraising and empowerment in giving a space for unique, underrepresented voices to be featured.

“Through two annual events (this and a community scavenger hunt focused on women-owned businesses and human services in the spring), we will be able to continue to serve our mission, raise awareness for, and get people on board with our cause,” Kaminsky said.

This event in particular will provide funding for a needs-based assessment for local African immigrants, construction of technology resources, establishment of a network infrastructure, and the transition to working in South Africa to expand their reach and that availability of the internet.

Alongside fundraising, this event itself acts as empowerment.

For me, really digging deep and finding your authentic voice and sharing it with others is courageous and terrifying at the same time. And anytime we can work through the fear, and come out of the other side feeling more powerful, we become better versions of ourself.”

For Kaminsky, this event is particularly fitted to their mission.

“For me personally, listening to someone use their authentic voice and speak their truth is a very powerful experience,” Kaminsky said. “I love any kind of performance art that makes me feel something, for me theatre, music, dance, and spoken word all do that for me. Whenever I get that feeling where my heartstrings are pulled on and I’m on the verge of tears, I really relish the feeling of being alive, and know that I am exactly where I am supposed to be at that moment.”

Alongside the poets, the event will feature a silent auction with items from Common Good Books, Punch Pizza, B. Resale, 3M and more. The proceeds for everything will support Find Your Power’s mission.

Kaminsky is excited that the events will all be hosted at Urban Growler as the business further supports their mission to celebrate diverse, female voices.

We are intentionally holding the event at a women-owned, women-brewed brewery that prides themselves on inclusivity.”

The event costs $8 for students or $12 for regular tickets and will happen Nov. 9 at Urban Growler Brewing Company from 7 p.m to 9:30 p.m.
