To our dearest Hamline Community,
Thank you. It is safe to say that these last two semesters have been the most insightful months of our college careers. We came into these roles scared and nervous — 136 years of Oracle history lies behind us, which is a whole lot of pressure when you are two naive, 20-year-olds. Yet, through the support of our community, peers and staff we have not only gained an understanding of the intricacies of our community, but we have made relationships, connections and memories that will last a lifetime.
Our staff was composed of a strong six coming into the semester, and it is ending with an even stronger 40. The students who joined our staff this year brought The Oracle to a place that we could have never imagined. Witnessing this, along with the continuously growing identity of our staff, has been something we have greatly cherished and we cannot wait to continue enjoying our time in these positions. Not only have we seen our team grow as people, but as journalists. The work we have produced this year has exceeded our expectations.
The Oracle won several awards this year, including a Best of SNO Award for a first-year’s outstanding report on a unique campus-related issue, and a badge for Continuous Coverage that represents the consistent, timely and well-written content published on the web. This could not have happened without the dedicated team behind the scenes — design, web and social media positions included. Even with delayed stories or source pushback, we persevered and cranked out content we are proud to present. We even started (and are continuing) a full redesign of our print, online and social media platforms. It has been an honor to serve you all this year. While we know we have our flaws, we are determined to grow and learn from our mishaps and do justice to our community.
We encourage you all to speak up and stand out. The Oracle is a platform for Hamline’s voices. Whether you want to work for us, or you want to submit a letter to the editor or even just simply pick up a paper off the stands on a Tuesday afternoon — we write for you. As we head into our same roles next year, we aim to continue uplifting your voices and representing the flourishing Hamline-Midway community.
We will see you next year, or else.
